Convert a Credit Card Statement

A card statement is a list of every charge you made and almost nothing else, which is exactly the thing worth having as a spreadsheet. Drop the PDF in and every line comes out itemised, categorised and totalled, in your browser, with the file never leaving your device.

How it works

How it works

01

Download the statement PDF from your card issuer, or open the one they emailed you

02

Drop it onto PivotBank; there is no separate card mode and no account needed to start

03

Every charge, credit, payment and fee is read out, in the order the statement lists them

04

Export to Excel or CSV, or to the accounting format your books want

What comes out

  • Every line as a row: date, description, amount and whether it was a charge or a credit, so refunds and payments are not silently mixed in with spending.
  • Charges categorised into groceries, dining, transport, subscriptions, bills, shopping and the rest, which is what most people actually open a card statement to see.
  • Recurring payments picked out by matching the merchant across the statement, which is how a forgotten subscription surfaces.
  • Top merchants and the largest single charge, so a month is legible without reading every row.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The PDF is read in the browser tab, which matters more for a card statement than almost any other document, because it is a list of where you were and what you bought.

Why a card statement checks differently from a bank statement

A current account statement carries a running balance on every line, and that makes it self-checking: opening balance, plus the credits, minus the debits, has to land on the closing balance. Most card statements have no such column. They have a previous balance, the charges, the payments and a new balance, and nothing per line.

So the balance panel says the check is unavailable rather than inventing a result, and the totals are what you check against instead: total charges and total credits, against the summary box the issuer prints. That is the honest version, and it is worth knowing which of the two documents you are holding before you rely on either.

Credit card statement questions

Which card issuers work?

It reads the PDF rather than talking to the issuer, so the question is whether the statement is a normal text PDF, not whose logo is on it. Visa, Mastercard and Amex statements from the major banks all parse, and so do store cards and business cards. A scanned or photographed statement goes through OCR instead.

Why does it say the balance check is unavailable?

Because most card statements have no running balance column, and the check needs at least two lines carrying one. That is a fact about the document rather than a problem with the conversion: the rows are still all there. On a card statement, check the total charges against the summary the issuer prints instead.

Are payments to the card counted as spending?

No. A payment to the card is a credit, and it is read as one, so it lands in the credits column rather than being added to what you spent. Refunds are treated the same way. That is the difference between a total that means something and one that double-counts your own money.

Can I use this for expenses or a tax return?

That is what most people use it for. The categories give you a first pass at splitting business from personal, and the CSV or Excel goes straight into a spreadsheet you can annotate. For accounting software, QBO, OFX and QIF exports are available on an unlocked statement.

Will it find my subscriptions?

It lists recurring payments by matching the merchant across the statement, which catches anything charged more than once in the period. A subscription billed once a month will show on a single statement only as one line, so a few months of statements is the way to see the pattern.

Is the statement uploaded anywhere?

No. Parsing, categorising and exporting all happen in your browser tab, and the PDF is never sent to a server. A card statement is a record of where you have been and what you bought, which is a good reason not to hand it to a website.
